Beautiful, multicolored and multicultural, Isla Mujeres is a small and charming island of Caribbean. Surrounded by white-sand beaches and a turquoise-colored sea of crystal, clear, calm and gentle waters. It is only 1600 feet wide and 4 miles long, ideal to visit riding a bicycle.
It takes its name from the discovery of a large amount of clay figurines representing women, in pre-Hispanic times, when the island was devolved to Ixchel, Mayan Goddness of fertility and the moon. On the island there is still a small archaeological vestiges. The hospitality of its people is impressive, in the big and small hotels existing, so as in the great variety of restaurants in its downtown area. The main ingredients of the gastronomical specialities on the island are fish and seafood, but one can also find international food restaurants for all tastes.
Getting to Isla Mujeres is just a 20 minute ferry ride from Cancun, and Playa Norte is the perfect place to snorkel or scuba dive.
